Vensters reboot a roaring success

The annual Vensters event is a beloved Stellenbosch tradition. It is the highlight of the annual welcoming programme for new arrivals on campus and is organised by the residences and Private Student Organisation’s (PSOs) of Stellenbosch University. For this event, the residences and PSOs are randomly paired up, and first-year students of each community produce a 15-minute show that includes a storyline with dances that follow an overarching theme. The theme for 2022 was Imagination: Back to the Future.

The organisers took the new theme to heart and presented Vensters in an innovative new hybrid format. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, Vensters 2021 could only take place online. This year, however, the performances were hosted in the Coetzenburg Centre, Stellenbosch, in seven sessions of two hours each on Saturday the 12th of February. Each session could be attended in person by an audience of 540, but the whole event was live-streamed as well. The in-person tickets sold out quickly, and 1 560 unique viewers streamed the event with an average viewing time of 69 minutes. The Stellenbosch Municipality and all other relevant safety stakeholders were impressed with the well-organised new version of Vensters which was both safe and fun.

Vensters 2022 was presented by Maties Connect in partnership with the Toyota SU Woordfees. Standard Bank supported the hosting of the event financially and sponsored prizes for the communities who put on the top-three performances:

1. Huis Meerte (Equite + Huis Ten Bosch + Meerhoff) 83%

2. Silystia (Simonsberg + Lydia + Venustia) 82%

3. Hipporina (Hippokrates + Nerina) & HelSerOs (Osler + Helshoogte + Serruria) – jointly in third position with 81% each.

Each of the first two communities receive R5 000 with the compliments of Standard Bank. Hipporina and HelSerOs share the prize for third position and receive R2 500 each.

A few smaller prizes were also awarded. These had no material value but bestowed official bragging rights on the winners.

The award for Best Choreography went to Hipporina (Hippokrates + Nerina). Daglene (Silene + Dagbreek) won the Best Backdrop category, and Piemetica (Pieke + Metanoia + Erica) the award for Best Script.
